Where local animal societies are concerned, SPCA would immediately come to mind.
However, due to the ever-increasing demand for pets and subsequently, the abandonment of pets, more animal societies have sprouted across our island to take in these unwanted pets, and give them a new lease of life. Do have a look at the following animal societies and if you can, volunteer for one that endears to you:)
Here's a list of the local animal societies:
- Action for Singapore Dogs
http://asdsingapore.com
Background: ASD was established in December 2000, with the aim of catering to the welfare of stray and abandoned dogs. They run solely based on public donation. They started out with a group of volunteers who acted as foster parents to abandoned and stray dogs, looking after them in their homes. These dogs were featured on the ASD website for adoption. Unlike SPCA, ASD stands by its no-kill policy, believing that every dog should be given the right to live. Recently, they opened an Adoption and Rescue Centre where the public can view the dogs up for adoption.Do check out the adoption gallery at their website.... you'd be surprised by the sheer number of cute dogs and pups up for adoption. There is also a section filled with heartwarming tales of some of the ASD dogs and how these dogs still have the capacity to love and forgive despite being victims of abuse.
- Animal Concerns Research& Education Society
www.acres.org.sg
Background: Acres is the one of the few wildlife conservation and education societies in Singapore. It's mission is to
1.Foster respect and compassion for all animals.
2.Improve the living conditions and welfare of animals in captivity.
3.Educate people on lifestyle choices which do not involve the abuse of animals and which are environment-friendly
Unknown to many, Singapore is one of the largest consumer in the Wildlife industry. The reason why this industry thrives so well here is by virtue of the large demand. This varies from shark's fin, bear bile, elephant tusks to illegal pets such as exotic tortoises and snakes. Wildlife is often neglected in Singapore but it is never too late to do your part in curtailing the problem. Visit Acres website to find out more about this sinister yet thriving trade and find out how you can make a difference.
- Animal Lovers' League
www.animalloversleague.com
Background:This society operates the Pets Villa in Pasir Ris farmway. They house stray and abandoned dogs for adoption and provide boarding services to sustain operations.
-House Rabbit Society ( Singapore )
www.hrss.net
Background:The House Rabbit Society of Singapore is an all-volunteer, non-profit organisation dedicated to rabbit welfare and awareness. HRSS seeks to reduce the number of unwanted rabbits in Singapore and improve rabbits' lives through education. Bunny lovers, do check out their website for adorable rabbit merchandise - proceeds will go to HRSS to finance their operations and bunny rescuing efforts.
- Cat Welfare Society
www.catwelfare.org
Background: In July 1999, a newspaper report about 5 kittens being burned alive in a box galvanised a few cat-loving friends into action. They sought to help stray cats and kittens that live amongst us and reduce the plight suffered by cats in Singapore. This was how the Cat Welfare Society began. Today, they actively work with volunteers, town councils and management committees to control the local cat population. They are strong advocates of sterilisation- a humane and effective way to curb excessive breeding. Cat lovers should visit their gift gallery and for the eager cat-owner wannabe, do browse the adoption bulletin for cats seeking a loving home.
If you guys know any other animal societies, do share it with the rest by leaving a comment:)
